Frequently asked questions

  • Most but unfortunately not everyone is suitable, please read “Am I A Good Candidate for PMU?”.

  • The level of discomfort experienced is very tolerable as we use topical numbing products throughout the procedure. Everyone’s pain threshold is different but most clients actually find the treatment relaxing. The procedure that is the least painful is eyebrows followed by eyeliner, with lips being the most sensitive area.

  • All of my techniques are performed with a cosmetic tattoo machine, implanting pigments into the upper dermis of your skin, I can, but due to experience choose not to use manual methods of implanting pigment ie. microblading. This is due to the variance in healed results both immediately and over time, machine methods are more predictable.

  • You will need to make sure your consultation form is completed prior to arrival, this is linked to you upon confirmation of your appointment. If you need help completing this then we can do so in person.

I ask that you come to your appointment how you like to present yourself on an average day ie. amount of makeup you normally wear. Your makeup will be wiped off in the treatment area so you might want to bring some foundation to touch up around the area afterwards.

Aside from that, on the day of treatment please refrain from drinking coffee or alcohol until afterwards.

Please read before and aftercare notes for in depth detail.

  • The healing process after a PMU procedure varies from client to client depending on; area tattooed, technique chosen, aftercare instructions and how your skin reacts to the procedure. Most clients will return to work the same day after a treatment. Some of the most common things clients can expect after a PMU procedure are:

    • Minimal redness around treatment area immediately after

    • Tenderness/ tightness in the area

    • Minimal swelling (more so on lips)

    • Itching sensation in the area

    • The treatment looking thicker and darker than straight after the treatment

    • Moderate scabbing followed by flaking in the coming days

Please see aftercare for more details.

  • Every client's skin responds differently to the tattooing and ultimately pigment retention can vary. It is also normal for some areas to be lighter than others after only one session. For this reason at the first session we err on the side of caution with pigment selection, which gives us a chance at the second session to see the healed results and make any necessary adjustments.

  • Depending on your skin type, skincare, lifestyle and any medications you take, you should get a minimum of 12 months out of your brows while I would expect a minimum of 18 months from eyeliner and lips. The lighter the colour of pigment used, the quicker it will fade.

A colour refresh is a treatment needed once every 12-24 months. If you are still happy with the colour and shape of your PMU at this stage, you are more than welcome to wait longer for your refresh but I would suggest no longer than 36 months.

  • I ask for a $100 booking fee for all new procedures and colour refresh sessions from new and existing clients. If you cancel within 48 hours there is simply not enough time to replace your 2-3 hour booking with another client. Ultimately a booking fee is necessary to reduce the amount of no shows. You are more than welcome to come for an no obligation consultation to make sure that you would like to commit to having a PMU procedure.

  • Tattooing the skin does not affect your hair colour so if you are currently tinting your brows to darken the hair itself you may want to continue to do so but perhaps less frequently.

  • I firstly need to review the work to see if I am generally happy with the level of work either by photo or in person. PMU that is very concentrated in colour is difficult to correct without some removal first. I will generally consider working over faded work where I consider the shape is OK.

  • Yes, although I ask that you plan botox 2 weeks and filler 4 weeks either side of your treatment with me. This is only applicable if the botox/filler is in the PMU treatment area. I do prefer to tattoo your PMU prior to having botox/filler if that is an option, due to the fact that cosmetic tattooing outlasts the botox/filler.

  • Please inform your technician about your PMU procedures you have and where they are located. A good technician will successfully avoid the PMU treatment area. If the technician hit the pigment with the laser/IPL beam, your PMU could darken and turn grey, which would then require removal.

  • There have been limited reports of transient skin irritation or cutaneous swelling around PMU treatment areas while undergoing an MRI. However the consensus is when you use a reputable pigment brand that only uses high quality ingredients which do not contain heavy metals MRI procedures should not be affected.

    • The biggest risk with PMU is risk of infection as we are breaking the skin to implant pigment. Infections are very rare, I have never experienced an infection in my previous 8 years of cosmetic tattooing experience. I only use sterilised and disposable tools in a sanitised environment. At the end of each treatment all product used is disposed of into biohazard bins with the exception of tweezers and drawing pencils. Following aftercare instructions properly is also important.

    • Allergic reaction is a possible but a very rare occurrence, also something I have never personally experienced. A pigment patch test can be performed a few days in advance for those with sensitive skin to topical makeup, hair dyes and metals such as silver, gold or nickel. A pigment patch test is not always reliable as allergic reactions can appear weeks, months or years later hence not necessarily recommended to do so.

    • For eyeliner procedures there is a very small risk of migration, which is why we insist on stopping any lash growth products 4 weeks prior and any omega oils at least 1 week prior to an eyeliner procedure. This is also a reason I do not tattoo thick eyeliner designs and do not work on the inner or outer canthus of the eye as this increases the risk.
